Which Oil Goes In The GMC Terrain

Schedule Service Appointment

To ensure proper engine performance and longevity, it's important to pay close attention to the engine oil in your GMC Terrain. You should check the engine oil level regularly, always change it at the correct interval, and only use oil approved to the proper specification and of the right viscosity grade. Below, you will find the appropriate engine oil for your Terrain model's engine:

  • For the LYX 1.5L turbo engine, use SAE 0W20 viscosity grade engine oil.
  • For the LTG 2.0L turbo engine, use SAE 5W-30 viscosity grade engine oil. If the temperature falls below -20 °F, use SAE 0W-30 viscosity grade engine oil.

When Should I Change My Oil?

The GMC Terrain is equipped with the engine Oil Life System (OLS), which calculates oil life based on vehicle use and displays the "Change Engine Oil Soon" message when it is time to change the engine oil and filter. After an oil change at our GMC service center in Columbus, a Certified Service technician will reset your OLS.

What Are Oil Change Warning Signs?

Here are three indicators that can help you prevent damage to your engine:

  • "Change Engine Oil Soon" - When this message displays, an oil change service is necessary for the vehicle as soon as possible, within the next 600 miles.
  • "Oil Pressure Low/Stop Engine" - If low engine oil pressure is indicated, safely bring your vehicle to a stop and do not restart your engine until the proper engine oil pressure is restored and the cause of the drop is corrected. You should check the oil level immediately. DO NOT operate the engine with the oil pressure warning light on.
  • Oil Leaks - One of the most immediate signs of an issue with your oil is noticeable leaks. If you detect a leak, address it with our dealership as soon as possible.

Are Oil Changes Part of Pro Grade Protection?

Yes! Our GMC Certified Service experts can help you take advantage of the benefits found with GMC Pro Grade Protection. Your first required maintenance visit, as stated in your vehicle's maintenance schedule, is included as part of GMC Pro Grade Protection. A maintenance visit consists of an oil change, tire rotation, and Multi-Point Vehicle Inspection.
