A Buyer’s Guide to the 2022 GMC Acadia

Overview

The second generation of the GMC Acadia was introduced in 2017 and received a significant redesign back in 2020, and enters 2022 with lots of new features to choose from, including new wheel designs and sizes and a new exterior color, Light Stone Metallic.

It can also be configured with either six or seven seats depending on how much cargo you need to haul, and both FWD and AWD options are available. The interior design also deserves a mention, with comfortable, high-quality materials used throughout the cabin.

Fuel Economy and Drivetrain

All models of the Acadia have either FWD or AWD powertrains available, and all run with a nine-speed automatic transmission, which also has a very effective manual mode for when you need that extra bit of control. The base model, the Acadia SLE, has a 228hp, 258lb-ft turbocharged four-cylinder engine as default. However, this can be upgraded to a 310hp, 271lb-ft naturally aspirated V6 for that extra bit of power.

The Acadia also enjoys stunning fuel economy. When in its FWD form, it makes 22/29mpg city/highway with the turbo I4 and 19/27mpg with the V6. In a testament to its efficiency, the Acadia isn’t hamstrung when equipped with AWD: it’s rated 22/27mpg with the turbo-four and 19/26 with the V6.

Cargo Space and Legroom

When compared to other models in the segment, which often have cramped second and third rows, the Acadia excels, with nearly 30 inches of room in the back row and close to 40 in the second, enough for an adult to sit comfortably on long road trips without being squeezed.

Speaking of long road trips, the Acadia also has plenty of space to carry your luggage, with a whopping maximum of 79 cubic feet with both rows folded down and a very impressive 13 cubic feet in the trunk alone.

Safety Features

The new suite of active safety features is one of the key components of the Acadia’s 2022 model refresh. Both AWD and FWD variants of the Acadia received excellent five-star overall safety ratings from the NHTSA, the highest grade possible. Although they haven’t tested the 2022 model, the 2021 version of the Acadia received an overall Good safety rating from the IIHS, which is also the highest possible score.

GMC is adding their Pro Safety Plus package as standard across the Acadia line-up this year. The package includes automatic high-beams and emergency braking, adaptive cruise control on the Denali variant, blind-spot and rear cross-traffic monitoring and a full set of parking sensors.
